On my mind - Bulbs

Gifts of bulbs are great
as long as you are given the instructions
By that I mean when to plant, where and how deep
as well as when they will flower

On my mind today are these bulbs
I was told they are Crocus - Iris - and Scilla (Cuban Lily)
but nothing else

Looks like I'm going to spending some time on the internet
finding out all the when wheres and hows

Does anyone in Australia know the answers?

Thanks to Rhonda at Down to Earth
Pop over there and see more of what's 'On my Mind' this week

  1. I miss my melbourne cottage style garden with roses etc and with lots of bulbs planted that bloomed beautifully. Too hot up this way so a tropical garden, lovely but not quite the same.

  2. The 'rule of thumb' is plant as deep as the bulb is in height. That is of course excluding those that like their neck poking through the surface of the soil. lol.

  3. I've been very lucky with bulbs over the years. I make sure the soil is workable, then plant as Olive mentioned above. Of course, Mom always said iris float on the top of the soil like a turtle so those are a little different.

I look forward to seeing the flowers when they bloom. :)

  4. No idea, but it does remind me to look up when and where to move my surprise lilies.

    Good Luck!

  5. I have always avoided bulbs because I simply cannot understand the procedures. Right now my amaryllis is dying even though everyone I know has had one and talked about how easy it is to grow.

  6. I can't help Cathy. Good Luck finding all the info you need. :-)

  7. Oh boy. You are right that it is a nice gift but directions would be such a help. Anytime I have questions about plants I go to my mom....which happens often.

And I wanted to tell you thank you. You weren't aware of doing this but you encouraged me in my cooking. I had a bag mix in the cabinet for making creamed veggie soup but had been to scared to try it. Why? Honestly, I have never made creamed soup before. After reading your soup fun I decided that I should suck in my breath and give it a go yesterday. Thank you! It was such a cold snowy day and so perfect for soup. I think I should have blended it jsut a tad bit more but all were pleased with the taste (and odd color) and ate heartily.

    Blessings to you!

  8. I have a friend who is an expert gardener. Too bad she doesn't live in Australia. But, you may find her blog interesting and informative. I'm sure she has a label on bulbs.
    EnJoy your weekend!

  9. I hope you figure it out! I know what you mean about receiving bulbs as gifts. Have a great weekend!
